Penis Sizes: Small Medium or Large?

In this section we present the data that was obtained on both erect penis length and circumference. What we hope to do is get across the concept that, within a given population, there is a distribution of penis lengths and circumferences. The distributions are characterised by an average value and, the further you get away from this average value, the fewer men report having penises with these sizes. So while the ‘mythical’ well-endowed man with a very long and very wide penis (or, conversely, a very short and very narrow penis) does exist, there are not that many of them about.

Data on erect length was provided by 2,848 of the respondents whilst slightly fewer – 2,789 – provided data on erect penis circumference (probably because it is slightly more difficult to measure). Analysis of this data – which is discussed in detail below – has allowed us to calculate average erect lengths and circumferences for this group of people. The average values of erect length and circumference are shown in the table below. Note that in this survey we asked those taking part to measure the circumference of the erect penis at its widest point, the position of which varies considerably and is discussed further below.

Penis Length

The distribution of erect lengths amongst the survey respondents is plotted in the chart. The first point to notice is that there is a clearly-defined modal group (151-160 mm) which had the greatest number of responses. Either side of this group the number of responses decreases as the erect length gets progressively shorter or longer.

The two groups at the extremes of the range (length < 100 mm and length > 250 mm) do not fit into this trend because they represent much wider ranges than the other groupings or, possibly, some of our survey respondents were not providing us with the correct measurement.

Ignoring the two extreme categories, we have an essentially symmetrical distribution of penis lengths (in statistical terms it is a ‘normal distribution’). Analysing the remaining data as an equal class interval distribution allows us to work out the mean erect length and its standard deviation, which were tabulated above. Not only is the nature of these results and the average value consistent with data collected during SSL International plc’s clinical studies, it is also quite similar to the data collected in another Internet penis size survey.

Penis Circumference

The distribution of erect circumferences, shown in the chart, is a little less clear than the plot for length. This is probably due to two reasons – firstly there is more room for ‘error’ whilst measuring circumference and secondly, we asked those taking part to take the measurement at the widest point of their erect penis which does vary quite significantly.

The peak of the distribution is broader, with the highest number of responses for the 121 – 130 mm grouping. The distribution is not as symmetrical, falling away quite quickly on the higher side of the ‘peak’ in comparison to the lower side. This suggests that smaller than average circumferences are more common than those which are higher than the average.

Again there is a surprisingly high response for the largest circumference grouping (circumference > 190 mm) – but the reason for this is very likely to be the same as that in the length category.

The data were analysed in the same way as for length, giving an average value and standard deviation quite similar in magnitude to other studies.

Penis Shape

As mentioned in the previous section, erect circumferences were measured at the widest point of the penis. Since penis shape, as well as size, can vary we asked which part of the penis was widest or whether there was no difference in width along the length. Our chart shows that in 42% of cases the head of the penis was its widest point whilst for 27% of the men the widest point was along the shaft of the penis. Smaller numbers of men – 12% and 14% of the respondents – said that the base of the penis was its widest point or that the penis didn’t vary in width at all.
